He was in an MP unit so he wound up there anyway, attached to the 1st Cavalry, which landed in Yokohama. Before being deployed to the Pacific, Seabee Ensign Wayne Faulkner was sent to Gulfport to build and test artificial fog barges. The plan was to cover amphibious landings but simple wind changes made it useless. (5:55)

Arriving on Okinawa late in the war, Wayne Faulkner had only heard a lot of shooting when two guard detachments took pot shots at each other. But when news of Japan’s surrender was announced, it was like the Fourth of July. (3:33)
