Roy Hector

For Brooklynite Roy Hector, basic training in the heat of Texas was a real jolt. After a cold, miserable Atlantic crossing, he joined the 79th Infantry Division in France, where one of the sergeants had some startling advice. (3:25)

When Roy Hector got to the Siegfried Line during the push into Germany, it rained 23 days straight. Once he crossed the Rhine further into Germany, his unit was pinned down by a German 88, and they had a surprise when they captured the gun crew. On another occasion, they found an empty machine gun nest and heard boisterous singing nearby. (5:29)

After close encounters with a couple of artillery shells, Roy Hector encountered a new Lieutenant, who confronted German tanks waving a pearl handled revolver. The officer soon realized his error. For his own weapon, Hector preferred a rifle over automatic weapons. (3:53)

At the end of the war, Roy Hector's first assignment was managing an Army laundry, which he didn't like at all. When the 79th Infantry Division was disbanded, he joined the Constabulary force and served at Nuremberg, where he built the translation infrastructure for the war crime trials. (4:07)

Roy Mooney

What a deal! Join the Army and go to Hawaii! That's what Roy Mooney and fifteen others he knew did in 1940. They were destined to be scattered all over and lose touch but they all got their start in the Pacific paradise. (This interview made possible with the support of NORMAN PRESSLEY.) (5:32)

War was expected in the army garrison on Hawaii, so the troops were training to defend the island from hostile forces. Roy Mooney remembers how he and another soldier were chewed out over a damaged M-1 rifle. (This interview made possible with the support of NORMAN PRESSLEY.) (5:26)

Morale was good in Hawaii in 1940. Why? The garden spot of the world, the ladies in Honolulu and the relatively easy duty. Roy Mooney would bivouac in his company's area of responsibility for a week at a time, then return to the barracks. Sometimes, they were Guinea pigs for the Army's C-ration development, so they got an early taste of instant coffee. (This interview made possible with the support of NORMAN PRESSLEY.) (5:44)

Roy Mooney was part of the cadre of troops on Hawaii that was there to defend the islands against possible aggression.
