Robert Burton was designated the company runner, which meant he had to move alone through the snowy Belgian countryside. His unit was in reserve when it was swarmed by German troops at the outset of the Battle of the Bulge. After a hasty withdrawal and many miles on foot, he was left at an aid station where he learned he would not be going back to the front. (5:58)

After he recovered from marching in the snow until his feet were frozen, Robert Burton returned to his unit in time to serve a little occupation duty in Germany. Soon he was back home where he was thankful to be in one piece. (2:02)

Robert Carrick

He was in civilian pilot training when he was drafted so Bob Carrick was destined for the Army Air Corps. He became a glider pilot and his first training exercise involved flying a conventional small plane to a designated altitude and cutting the engine. After he made the switch to real gliders, he once rode a thermal updraft for four hours. (3:59)

Glider pilot Bob Carrick was so good that he was kept on as an instructor after training. As gliders were deployed in Sicily and then Normandy, he volunteered until they sent him overseas. Unlike the majority of glider pilots, he was assigned to the Pacific theater. (4:18)

Most of his missions were cargo or troop transport missions but glider pilot Bob Carrick did fly two combat missions during his Pacific deployment. Both times he flew behind Japanese positions to put combat troops in place. The gliders were also prized for their ability to deploy jeeps quickly. Just open the nose and drive out. (4:40)

Robert Farmer

Robert Farmer grew up on a farm and remembers when the Great Depression hit and how his family lost their farm. When he was 18 years old, Farmer received a letter from the president to report for military duty. Soon after, he was sent to training in Fort Knox, endured an incredibly difficult boot camp, and was eventually placed in a tank battalion. (This interview made possible with the support of DR. For the next 14 days, Farmer would have to undergo terrible conditions out at sea before finally arriving in England to fight in the war. After he got to England, the Battle of the Bulge started and he was positioned as gunner in a tank of 5 men including himself. However, the worst was yet to come. After the frostbite from his legs was treated, Farmer was transferred to Holland for a little while and then back to Germany for more work inside a tank. During this time, he was transferred from the 8th to the 9th Army. He distinctly remembers the German citizens firing bazookas at his tank while it was rolling through the streets, the vast number of German surrendering, and what it was like to carefully cross the Rhine and Rur rivers.
