Rick Goddard
Cold War
| Strategic Air Command
Rick Goddard discusses the challenges we faced during the Cold War against the Soviet Union. At any moment, they might need to mobilize six planes with nuclear weapons. (1:58)
Rick Groulx
Vietnam
| 7th Engineers
Growing up independent, joining the Marine Corps felt like the right decision for Doc Groulx. After getting his orders for deployment, he went with his platoon to to Red Beach, near Danang. (5:59)
Facing his first firefight, Doc Groulx had to get acquainted with the idea of losing men to casualties. After a truck exploded in his company and many lives were lost, Doc's role as the company medic was put to the test. (8:34)
When getting the orders to join his Combined Action Platoon, Doc Groulx thought through the idea of helping his wounded soldiers make it home alive and decided it was worth it. Making relationships with the Vietnamese people was essential to their success as a group. (10:00)
Though he thought he would not re-enlist, he found himself back in the service within a year. After returning home, transitioning into civilian life was not at all easy for him as a Vietnam vet. (7:13)
Doc Groulx reflects on the effects that Vietnam had on his life today. He'll never forget the things that happened to him and learning to deal with them has only helped him. (10:22)
Rick Hilton
Cold War
| Multiple Units
He was only four years old when Rick Hilton's uncle let him "fly" his airplane. The kid couldn't reach all the controls but he did get a deep desire to fly. He got his chance in college with the Air Force cadet program and was soon piloting jet fighters. (5:43)
When an alert was sounded, the procedure for fighter pilot Rick Hilton was to get his aircraft fueled and wait at the end of the runway with a live nuclear weapon on board. Someone thought this was a little too much power for a fighter jock so the procedure was changed to include blocking the taxiway with a fuel truck. Then a real alert came in. (4:21)
Fighter pilot Rick Hilton was scrambled and sent aloft from his base in New Mexico for possible strikes in Cuba during the missile crisis. He was amazed when he contacted the FAA for flight clearance. No low priority this time. (3:38)
Rick Hilton was based in Thailand during his first Vietnam tour with a fighter squadron that flew missions mainly over North Vietnam. Their gunners weren't always the best shots, but there were a lot of them. When he looked out his cockpit on a tough mission, the sky was full of red raindrops going in the wrong direction. (5:59)
