Roger Glenn
Operation Iraqi Freedom
| 391st Military Police Battalion
After his tour in Iraq, Roger Glenn headed up the MP battalion stationed at Guantanamo Bay. Guarding the detainees there was a tricky business. They were incredibly hostile and politics could not be kept out of the situation. (6:10)
Roger Glenn pays tribute to the leaders and peers he encountered in his Army career that had a profound impact on him. (3:29)
In both Iraq and Afghanistan, rapid success was not followed by sustained success. Roger Glenn laments the lack of foresight and vision that caused this. You don't go into a country without understanding the people and the dynamics of the place. (6:52)
Roger Hamann
Vietnam
| 23rd Tactical Air Support Squadron
When Roger Hamann volunteers for special assignment in the US Air Force, he is sent to train in jungle survival and POW interrogation. (6:10)
Upon his arrival in Vietnam, Roger Hamann is assigned to serve as a "Rustic", communicating with French-speaking Cambodian troops from the back seat of an OV-10. Though he flies dozens of combat missions out of his Thailand air base, one in particular still haunts him. (7:23)
Hamann admires a Cambodian colonel and his soldiers, whose sacrifice was felt throughout the war. The Rustics feel guilt and dismay following orders to vacate the region, leaving their Cambodian allies to face communist aggression without US air support. (5:43)
Hamann returns to the US to serve the remainder of his military time close to his home in Maine. Just days into a new job, Hamann - who was never wounded in combat - loses an eye in a carpentry accident. (5:29)
Roger Jones
WWII
| 94th Fighter Squadron, 1st Fighter Group
As an eager young pilot during World War II, Roger Jones describes his first mission escorting bombers on their bombing runs out of Italy. (2:10)
Roger Jones remembers both his excitement and his concern over bombing a farm complex in Italy during World War II. (4:13)
After a bombing mission over Italy, Roger Jones recalls escorting a damaged B-24 bomber that was losing altitude over the Alps. (3:39)
