Navy gunship pilot Robert Goddard remembers close calls he had in Vietnam, some due to enemy fire, some to friendly fire and at least one of his own making. (4:26)
His experience in Vietnam as a Navy helicopter pilot gave Robert Goddard a sense of very close kinship with the men he met there. It also honed the skills needed to succeed in civilian life after the war. Did any of the Vietnam War movies get it right? He says there are two. (2:48)
Huey gunship pilot Robert Goddard recalls the time some "hot intel" turned into a hot reception from the Viet Cong. He can't pinpoint who it was who planted the false information, but it was a set up, for sure. (4:02)

Robert Hegel

Robert Hegel was still a young man when WWII began. Despite dropping out of high school and joining the workforce, he answered the call to duty and joined the Navy in 1942 where they would train him to be a signalman. (3:00)
Upon enlisting in the Navy, Robert Hegel was trained and put aboard LCI-27 to serve as their signalman. The war in the Pacific was underway and it would be a long journey there from the east coast. (5:52)
LCI-27’s first assignment would be to drop off Australian soldiers to fight in the New Guinea campaign, but Robert Hegel recalls being able to see some Pacific Islanders perform beforehand. Robert tells the story of reaching the battle and the men they put on the beaches of Lae. (6:29)
