5:08   |   Her brothers and cousins were all in the service and participating in the war, so it was not surprising that Martha Carrick, Martha Thompson at the time, would end up serving in some capacity. She joined the WAVES, Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service. After training, she reported to the San Diego Naval Repair Base, where the WAVES relieved men for overseas duty.

    As one of the WAVES, Women Accepted for Emergency Volunteer Service, Martha Carrick faced some reluctance from the men at the San Diego base where she served. The women won them over and soon the change was just normal business. After the war she continued to set an independent path.
