5:16 | David Phillips wanted to go fight the Japanese but he was too young. He went to work for a shipbuilder but left when it made him sick. He enlisted at last and was made a leader at boot camp because he knew close order drill so well. Graduated from torpedo school, he shipped out on a slow LST for North Africa.

Trained as a Torpedoman, David Phillips had nothing to do in Salerno so he became a guard for the Allied base there. This allowed him to get sweet revenge on the crew of the ship that brought him over the Atlantic and got on his bad side. He also met an AWOL entrepreneur who made out pretty well in Italy.
After a fast trip home from North Africa, David Phillips was sent to Maryland to test a newly designed torpedo since he had been trained as a Torpedoman. He was amazed at the new high-tech weapon and delighted with the liberty in Washington.
