Her brothers and cousins were all in the service and participating in the war, so it was not surprising that Martha Carrick, Martha Thompson at the time, would end up serving in some capacity. She joined the WAVES, Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service. After training, she reported to the San Diego Naval Repair Base, where the WAVES relieved men for overseas duty.
