  When Roland Guidry was given the command of the 8th Special Operations Squadron, he had to prove himself because he was not from a special ops background, per se. He did just fine. The missions he'd flown in Vietnam were perfect preparation. He says it takes a certain type of low key individual to excel at that type work.

Then he got a chance to go to Ranger School and he jumped at it. It turned out to be the best training he ever received and it led to the regular commission he wanted.

  After his Vietnam tour, General Ray Davis had a series of jobs at Quantico and in Washington, the last of which was Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps. He did not slow down in retirement, however.

  Not happy with his original MOS, Olin Rossman reenlisted as an infantryman. He was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division and trained at frigid Fort Drum in New York. He was well qualified before he saw combat, went to all the schools, including Ranger School where he suffered a mishap. (Caution: strong language.)

  It was the stupidest weapon system he'd ever seen. Ed Fulghum was being trained on the ENTAC, a French-made anti-tank missile that was wire guided. When he tried to set one up in the field, the battery was missing so he improvised.

  Ray Davis was back at the Marine Corps schools where he had a run-in with a new boss. Friendships matter and some friends in high places rescued him and got him into a better job at the War College. Then he got exposed to intelligence work at Marine Corps HQ, followed by a tour in Europe. But there was a little place in Southeast Asia that was starting to heat up.

  After retiring from the Air Force, Allyn Johnson acquired several college degrees thanks to the GI Bill. He tried running his own business but it wasn't long before he and his wife really retired.

  Everyone remembers Black Hawk Down but the incident portrayed in that movie was not the first time a Black Hawk helicopter was shot down in Mogadishu.   After rejoining the Army as an MP, Ed Fulghum returned to Korea where he guarded inspection teams. His next assignment, back in the States, was in a Military Government company, which was trained to rebuild and reset devastated areas. He decide that the Military Police was a career dead end, so he returned to the infantry.

There were congressional briefings to give, an investigation to face and a special operations structure to build up. This wasn't made any more pleasant by the conflicting personalities involved.

  Keith Nightingale remembers that, during the buildup of the new Ranger Battalion, the team researched units from the past including British commandos and Vikings to extract any useful training techniques. Live fire exercises and road marches became very important. In December of 1974, the new Rangers were ready.

Roland Guidry was the first chief of air operations at the newly formed Joint Special Operations Command, the organization created to deal with unconventional warfare in the future.
