Bud Ellis grew up in the small Iowa town named as home by Radar O’Reilly on the TV show MASH. Working in the local factories didn’t appeal to him so he enlisted in the Air Force. 12 Days later the Korean War broke out.
Bud Ellis and his B-29 crew mates had almost no resistance from enemy fighters during their runs over Korea. That did not stop him from wondering what would happen to him in the frigid cold below should he have to bail out clad only in the flight suit he wore on board.
After the Korean Truce, Bud Ellis landed in Tokyo on a test mission and the ground crew could not find a single maintenance stand in the airport. A chance look inside a closed hangar revealed why.
